Structural element in electrical engineering cables or signal carriers
To protect an electrical engineering cable or signal carrier (e.g. optical cables) against kinks or high tensile strains, carbon or glass-fibre rods are incorporated in the cable (tension member). The pultrusion rods are supplied on rolls to the cable manufacturer, who incorporates them in his cables by means of a continuous process.
Another application is to incorporate signal carriers or conductors in the composite profile by means of co-pultrusion. A pultrusion profile is then produced with an integrated copper wire, copper core or optical fibre. Here, the carbon or glass fibre is used as an outer jacket that protects the signal carrier or conductor.
